Bhubaneswar: In the current Hockey World Cup, India lost to Wales 4-2 in their last group match on Thursday. However, despite this victory, India is in second place in Pool ‘D’. In another match of this group, England, who lost to Spain by 4-0, topped Pool D and advanced directly to the quarter-finals. Both India and England finished the group campaign with 7 points with two wins. However, England has reached the quarter-finals as the group winners in terms of better goal difference. India will now meet New Zealand, who won the third place in Pool C in the crossover, on January 22.

Before the India-Wales match, England-Spain faced off in another Pool D match. England lost to Spain 4-0. Therefore, India had to beat Wales by more than 8 goals to be the group topper. Although India played aggressively, they were only able to defeat Wales 4-2. On behalf of India, Akashdeep Singh scored two goals while Shamser Singh and Harmanpreet Singh scored one goal each. Wales, who were playing the World Cup for the first time, also gave India a tough fight. Gareth Farlagh and Jacob Draper scored goals for Wales.

India took to the field with the goal of a big win. The Harmanpreet-led party made its stance clear from the beginning. The team attacked the Welsh goalpost. The home team also kept the ball under their control. Well, the young team of Wales gave a tough challenge to the Indian forward division. In the first quarter, India could not get a single penalty corner. The first quarter was scoreless. India also played with Joser in the second quarter. In the 16th minute of the match, India got the first penalty corner. But Harmanpreet Singh’s shot was blocked by the opposing defender. India had to be disappointed again.

Then India got another chance to score. But even this time Harmanpreet could not convert the penalty corner into a goal. Shamsher Singh opened India’s account by scoring a wonderful goal from the rebound. On the other hand, Wales tried to equalize the score, but the experienced Indian defense did not give the opponent a chance. India maintained a 1-0 lead by the end of the first half.

In the second half, India intensified the attack. Akashdeep doubled India’s lead in the 33rd minute. Wales were able to pull one goal back thanks to Falargo’s goal. The excitement of the match was increasing. After three minutes, Akashdeep scored another goal and made India lead 3-1. Jacob’s goal made Wales score 3-2 and put pressure on India. India got a penalty corner at the last minute and captain Harmanpreet converted it to secure a 4-2 victory for India.
