Who received the ‘Sports Icon’ award
New Delhi: Former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina has been honored by the Maldives Government with the prestigious ‘Sports Icon’ award for 2022. He was nominated for the award along with former Real Madrid player Roberto Carlos, Jamaican runner Asafa Powell, former Sri Lankan cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya and Dutch legend footballer Edgar Davids.
Raina was given the award for various achievements in her cricket career. The award was presented in the presence of the Minister of Youth and Sports of Bangladesh, Mohammad Zaheer Ahsan Russell. Al Qadi Badr Abdul Rehman, Deputy Minister of Sports of Saudi Arabia, and Ahmed Nazir, Honorary President of the Maldives Tennis Association, were present at the award ceremony. The event was presided over by Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih and was attended by the Minister of Sports and Sports. Mahlouf said he aims to hold the awards on a regular and annual basis to provide support, co-operation and recognition to players in various sports. According to a press release, the Maldives Sports Awards were held on the night of March 14, 2022. Singers from home and India performed at the event.
In 2011, Suresh Raina played a key role in helping the Indian cricket team win the World Cup. He also played a key role in the Chennai Super Kings winning the Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy four times. He is the first Indian player to score 4,000 and 6,000 runs in his T20 career. Raina, meanwhile, is the first cricketer to score 5,000 runs in the IPL. Raina even holds the record for most half-centuries in Champions League T20 history.
